Ok, so most will say Peter Gabriel is their favorite member of Genesis (if they say they like the band at all), but I'm beginning to think that Steve Hackett is mine (even tho I love Gabriel's stuff and have it all).

His guitar sound is singular (actually, only Bob Welch, shortly of Fleetwood Mac, comes close), ghostly, classy and atmospheric.

He has produced his share of goofs, to be sure...I haven't really gotten into too many of his recent releases. But, I would say his first 6 or 7 are all good, filled with prog rock experimental stuff, and classical guitar work reminiscent of the best. If you like quiet acoustic guitar, check out "Momentum" or "Bay of Kings." If you like prog rock, then any of the first 4 or 5 should satisfy you.

The photos are from a great Genesis book by photographer Armando Gallo called "I Know What I Like."

There is a nice tribute site complete with song clips at:

I also recently discovered a great prog rock site here.
